Impact of vaggeyakaras on kuchipudi dance: A historical and analytical study

Kuchipudi, one of the eight classical dance forms of India recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, has evolved over several centuries as an intricate synthesis of poetry, music, and movement. Central to this evolution is the transformative role played by vaggeyakaras poet-composers who authored both the literary text (vak) and musical setting (geya) of their works. This paper investigates the multi-dimensional impact of major vaggeyakaras on the development, repertoire, aesthetics, and choreographic vocabulary of Kuchipudi dance. Through a chronological and thematic analysis spanning Tirtha Narayana Yati, Siddhendra Yogi, Kshetrayya, Annamacharya, Jayadeva, Narayana Tirtha, Bhadrachala Ramadasu, and Tyagaraja, the study demonstrates that each vaggeyakara contributed not merely compositional material but distinct philosophical, devotional, and structural frameworks that fundamentally reshaped the art form. The paper draws on primary textual sources, institutional scholarship from PottiSreeramulu Telugu University, the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the University of Hyderabad, and published academic journals to argue that vaggeyakaras are the foundational architects of the Kuchipudi aesthetic canon without whose contributions the dance form would lack its characteristic depth of abhinaya, its structural diversity of repertoire, and its unique integration of Bhakti devotion with classical performance.
